Known for: Instructional art, Bed-ins with John Lennon (1969)
Notable work: Cut piece (1964)
Art historical context: Fluxus movement, Conceptual Art, Experimental music Between 1961 and 1967 Yoko Ono developped a series of Instructional pieces: short texts intended to initiate or inspire events. Her instructions and performance pieces present participants with concrete directions for imaginative and often impossible actions, such as “Draw a line with yourself. Go on drawing until you dissappear.” Many pieces are absurd and completely unfeasible. It can only be fancied carrying out the actions, but due to the paradoxical structure of these imaginations, they are bound to collapse into nothing.
