Known for: Long-term performances
The Taiwanese performance artist Tehching Hsieh is known for his series of long-term performances, each of which lasted one year. For example, he locked himself in a cage where he was supplied only with the bare necessities, and he was neither allowed to speak, nor read, nor listen to the radio (Cage Piece, 1978–1979). He spent another year completely outdoors; he was not allowed to enter any buildings or covered areas (Outdoor Piece, 1981–1982).

He declared: ‘Will make Art during this time. Will not show it publicly.’ During this period, Hsieh pledged that whatever art he was making during this period, he would not show it. At the end, on 1 January 2000 he issued his concluding report, ‘I kept myself alive. I passed the December 31st, 1999.’ The report consisted of cutout letters pasted onto a single sheet of paper. He then completely stopped creating art. | |
