Kunsthistorischer Kontext: Contemporary Art, Situationism
Tino Sehgal designs and constructs situations that only temporarily exist as works of art – for the time and the place where they are performed. They remain volatile, and they may neither be photographed nor documented: no relics and ephemera shall remain, and nothing should be written about them in the exhibition catalogs – as if they had never existed. Even the purchase or sale of the works must be done only in the form of verbal agreements in the presence of witnesses, while the use of any form of written contract, receipt, document or image is expressly prohibited by the artist.

This progress, 2010. 1st | B | All six levels of the spiral gallery at the Guggenheim Museum were vacated for the exhibition, and the walls left empty. At the entrance to the rotunda, the visitor was greeted by a young boy who asked: "What is progress?" The boy accompanied the visitor until they reached the end of level 1, at which point a young man came up and introduced himself (the boy stayed behind). On the way to the next level, the young man asked the visitor about his personal beliefs and attitudes. At each level, the conversation was continued by an older interlocutor. At the highest level of the rotunda, the conversation was led by an old man who drew attention to the human condition in the modern world, discussing issues of responsibility and sharing personal experiences with the visitor. | |
