A Retrospective (Tomorrow is Another Fine Day), 2005. 1st | A | "For his first retrospective exhibition, together with curators from ARC, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Hans Ulrich Obrist and Laurence Bossé), the London Serpentine Gallery (Rochelle Steiner) and the Rotterdam Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rein Wolfs), Rirkrit Tiravanija developed an experimental concept, in which the works of art themselves are not present. Instead of these works, seven museum halls and gallery rooms which have exhibited important Tiravanija works in the past, will be reconstructed in the large halls of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen: the Kölnischer Kunstverein, the Wiener Secession, the former 303 Gallery spaces and others. On the basis of three theatrical scripts, visitors are guided through the empty rooms. Images of the absent installations will be evoked through words and actions by guides and actors. American science fiction author Bruce Sterling, Rirkrit Tiravanija himself, and the French artist Philippe Parreno wrote three scripts enabling the public to view the works at three levels. The once-only nature of the installations produced especially for the various institutes at the time will again be clearly emphasized." (Excerpt of the press release) | |
