American Artist
Known for: Seemingly immaterial installations, lighting installations, light objects, the transformation of exhibition spaces into walkable and three-dimensional images.
Art historical context: Light and Space movement, Post-Minimalism
After painting for a long time, Robert Irwin stopped in the late 1960s, even giving up his studio in 1972. Since then, his artistic interests have shifted to exhibition spaces themselves. Showing nothing (except what was already there) was for him a means of drawing the viewer's attention to the nature of exhibition spaces. He renounced showing objects, and made only minimal, discreet interventions into existing exhibition spaces.
Exhibited works
Experimental Situation, 1970. 1st | A | During his month long exhibition at Ace Gallery in October 1970, Robert Irwin left the room as he had found it: empty. On the invitation, it was noted, however, that the artist will visit the gallery every day in order to think about the possibilities for art works for this space. | |
