Aire (Air), 2002. 1st | B | At first glance, the installation Aire (Air) by Teresa Margolles looks like a remake of Art & Language's Air Conditioning Show (1967): The spectator enters a room that is apparently empty apart from a working air-conditioning unit. He perceives nothing else. The small label simply lists the elements making up the installation, namely the conditioning system and vaporised water. The water is from public mortuaries in Mexico City and was used to wash the corpses of as yet unidentified people prior to post-mortem examination. What seemed to be an unimpressive empty room suddenly reveals itself as physically and emotionally charged – or would you go back to it if you know what you are breathing in? | |
