The black passage, 2006. 2nd | A | Purpose-built tunnel, CD player, speakers, amplifier, assorted wires, halogen light, black velvet curtaining, audio. Dimensions: 20 x 2 x 2 m. Duration: 11 min. 11 sec. A sound recording of an empty elevator cage descending into and ascending out of the South Deep mine, the deepest twin-shaft goldmine in the world. This was broadcast from a wall of speakers installed at the end of a narrow 20 m long black tunnel. Visitors enter the long, but confined, space and are drawn towards a frame of golden light emitted from a location behind the speakers at the end of the tunnel. The sound is diffused at high volume and can be experienced as both an auditory and a physical sensation. The scenography of the black speakers framed with light is a reference to Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square.

He conducted interviews with the residents, compiling these audio recordings, and then sealing in a time capsule that was buried in the town’s park. It will be opened on August 4, 2103. For the duration of the festival, the artist was available to walk with visitors in Egebjerg and hold private conversations. | |
