Robert Rauschenberg was not the first artist to paint completely monochromatic images, but he was the first to use a non-white color. Alexander Rodschenko already believed in 1921 that he had reached the end of painting when he made a series of monochrome paintings, stating: "I reduced painting to its logical conclusion and exhibited three canvases: red, blue and yellow. I affirmed: This is the end of painting. These are the primary colors. Every plane is a discrete plane and there will be no more representation." | |
