Trylon, New York, 1977. GF | A | gelatin silver print. 20 x 24" (50.8 x 61 cm). Edition of 25. In the series Theatres (started in the mid-70s), Sugimoto photographed old American movie theaters and drive-ins with a folding 4 x 5 camera and a tripod. At the start of a movie screening, Sugimoto opened his camera's shutter and exposed the film for the duration of the entire movie. Aside from the film projectors, there was no other source of illumination. Due to the long exposure time, there is nothing to see on the photos from the screened movies – the print is nothing but a white surface, while the architectural details and seats of the theater emerge. With this series, Sugimoto wanted to make time visible in photographic images. | |
