Black Square, 1915. EG | A | Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 79.5 cm. A painting that has been cleaned and emptied of all objecthood.
White on white. 1918 EG | A | Oil on canvas, 78.7 x 78.7 cm. Three years later, Malevich approaches even closer to nothingness with his all-white painting White on White, in which he drives the emptying of the image to the limits of painting and perception. For his critics, this painting marked for many a kind of "zero point for painting." Malevich's aim was to create an "experience of pure non-objectivity in the white emptiness of the liberated nothing" – the contours of the square do, however, remain recognizable.
