Know for: Light projections, light installations and total (walk-in) environments
Art historical context: Light and Space Movement, Minimalism, Op Art, Land Art
James Turrell has been experimenting with light, darkness and space since 1966, completely dispensing with traditional media and materials used in the visual arts. He creates conditions and forms with light, bringing the viewer to the edge of perception, where space and time seem to dissolve and where the immaterial becomes a 'physical' experience.
Exhibited works
Night Passage. 1987 GF | A | Light installation, fluorescent and tungsten light, dimensions variable. The work is exhibited HERE.
Night Light. 2000 GF | A | Turrell created a darkroom at Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich in which the viewer finds himself lost in complete darkness without any sense for time, space and orientation, until after a long while, finally, the eyes accustom to the darkness e and a barely perceptible glow becomes visible.
End Around. 2006 GF | A | "The work simulated a total loss of depth perception. The viewer was bathed in a field of blue light and, at some point, the light almost becomes a physical presence because of a loss of depth perception." (1)
